  1. Not a lot of shrink.. and cut badly by the factory

Posted by Barry in Seneca on 15th Jun 2016

Overall, worked OK and Spectrum audio had the best prices.

I had the occasion to specify and use Rosco 3909 Shrink Mirror for the covering surface on one side of portable room dividers in a large dance studio. The five nearly 6' high x 4' frames were made from 3/4"EMT tubing, center braced with 1/2" emt. The Shrink mirror film was attached with 3-M double-sided tape.

I found that the roll was exactly 30' long (After cutting, I laid all the side scrap end-to-end and measured). OK. I designed the dividers with that in mind, making the covered length about 3" smaller, it would make 5 panels.

I encountered several problems with the installation:

    1. The roll ends weren't cut square. As the attached photo shows, each end was cut almost 3" out of square. So, when I cut 72" pieces, the first and last pieces were short. With no extra material on the roll.

    2. The tape which held the material on the roll left a permanent mark about 6" into the mirror which I could not remove when shrinking. (Yes, the tape was fully removed.) I also couldn't afford to scrap the first 6" because I didn't know the actual roll length. (I used a 212,000 btu propane shrinkfast gun.)

    3. Your shrink mirror doesn't shrink much. I've used plastic shrink wrap to cover boats, machines and theater drops many times over the last 20+ years. I'd hoped the Shrink Mirror would be similar to the Dr-Shrink.com film which has a high shrink percentage. The shrink ability of your material is very, very, very small (Maybe 5%). Even though I followed the instructions shipped with the product and watched numerous videos on the subject, I still had some wrinkles that I couldn't get out. (I've never had that with the other products.)

Overall, they look pretty good. They aren't as clear as glass mirrors, they are a little milky or fogged. As for some wrinkles around the edges; they are just going to have to live with them.

    My main suggestions are:
    1. Include at least 1 roll wrap of film in addition to the specified length. This will allow for out-of-square cuts and marks from the core. State on the roll the actual shipped length. (This allows some starting edge sins to be cut away.)
    2. Rather than using tape, use a stretch plastic wrap or some other fastening system that will not mark the mirror.
    3. Try to have your supplier pre-stretch the film in both directions more than now. Also, please specify the stretch percentage (warp & weft separately).
